With reference to paragraph 2 of your letter
No.35537/20 of the 3rd August, concerning the increase
payable on Hong Kong Widows' & Orphans Pensions, I have
the honour to transmit for your information a copy of a telegram from the Colonial Government authorising payment
of a temporary increase of 25% on such pensions with effect
from the 1st January, 1919.
2. We are dealing with the issue of the arrears of
increase on sterling pensione and dollar pensione payable
at a fixed rate of 3/-.
3. There are three pensions which are paid partly
in sterling, and partly in dollars at the current rate of
the day. A case in point is the pension of Mrs. Parkinson,
who is paid as follows :-
$13. 15. 2. p.a. in sterling.
g258.17 a year at the current rate, minimum rate
payable 3/-
We were informed semi-officially on the 24th February last
that Mrs.Parkinson should be paid provisionally either at the rate of £52.9.8. (i.e. £13.15.2. plus g 258.17 at 3/- plus
an increase of 25%), or at the rate of 13.15.2. plus
8258.17 at the current rate of exchange, whichever was higher,
and that you were referring to Hong Kong in the matter.
